Almost always an alpha channel. Apple rejects a PNG that carries one even when nothing in the image is transparent, and most image editors add one by default. Every file this tool writes is truecolour with no alpha channel.
The tool will do it and the file will be valid, but it will look soft next to every competitor on the page. It is always better to recapture at the device’s native pixel size — the Simulator reproduces those exactly.
For most apps, two: 1320 × 2868 for the 6.9-inch iPhone class and 2064 × 2752 for the 13-inch iPad class. App Store Connect scales those down to fill every smaller class automatically. Mac takes a 16:10 image and Apple Watch takes its own size, both outside that chain.
Crop to fill when the capture is the right shape and you can lose a few pixels at the edges. Fit and pad when the shape is different and cropping would cut into the interface — the padding is drawn in a solid colour, never left transparent.
